Opinion: Persistence

I read this story in that phenomenal book that has transcended different eras and the principles contained in its pages are still as potent and relevant even with the changing times. The book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill written in 1937 told the story in one of the beginning chapters of a man named R.U Darby and his uncle.

The uncle of R.U Darby caught the gold fever that started around 1848 and journeyed west in search of the precious mineral. Fortunately he found the ore, invited his nephew and after the first cart of ore was shipped. Afterwards, they discovered that the veins of the gold ore had disappeared.

After several failed attempts to find the ore in that discovered mine, they quit and went back home to Williamsburg, Maryland to pay back a lot of debt. They had borrowed to acquire the machinery to ship the ore home.

The man who bought the machinery from them for a few hundred dollars went to the abandoned mine with a mining engineer who did a little bit of calculation and discovered the gold. The engineer said that the former owners were not conversant with ‘fault lines’ because R.U Darby and his uncle stopped just three feet from where the ore was.

A lot of people give up at the edge of their break forth because of some of the following reasons.

Not having the deep desire to see to a fruitful conclusion, what they had planned to achieve.
Being intimidated by failures and setbacks.
Listening to what others have to say about their personal desires and allowing diverse opinions to upset their plans.
Not seeking advice(s) from those who have done it before or who are knowledgeable about what they seek to achieve.
Giving up too soon because of failed expectations.
Wrong attitude and pride in asking for direction when there is a bump in their road.
Soliciting advices from the wrong people.
Looking for the short cut to success and achievements.

Anyone who wants to achieve anything worthwhile must learn that persistence, growing in knowledge, and learning from failure are three of the main ingredients that make success achievable.
