Opinion: The Weakness of Cramming

Cramming can be defined as the process of absorbing data in an effect to disseminate the information without really internalizing its meaning and knowledge.

I crammed most of the multiplication table in primary school because I disliked arithmetic and often wished it could be taken out of our subjects, however my wish didn’t come to pass, so I managed to pass the subject.

However, English literature and anything that had to do with writing were my favorites and I excelled at them without many efforts, often wondering why some others find it difficult to comprehend.

Those subjects that I read, understood and mastered stayed with me, locked inside the functioning part of my memory, always ready and available to be used whenever I need them, consciously or unconsciously.

I can’t say the same for those subjects that I crammed simply to pass and be rid of quickly. A recent encounter revealed a major disadvantage of that method of learning.

“Good morning ma, can I have a moment of your time?” She said to me almost blocking my path. “My name is Beatrice from—”

I cut her short. “Sorry madam. Next time.”

Still not moving, she said again with a plastered smile on her face, “good morning ma, can I have a moment of your time? My name is Beatrice from Atico Silensi, an agro—”

I cut her short again, now attempting to sidetrack her, “apologizes madam, I’m rushing to make an appointment.”

Still blocking my path. “Good morning ma, can I have a moment of your time?” She said to me almost blocking my path, again. “My name is Beatrice from Atico Silensi, we are an agro-allied company located at—”

Something was peculiar but I was too pressed for time to notice. “What is it about?” I asked in a bid to get the main information about what she was waiting to pitch.

“Good morning ma, can I have a moment of your time? My name is Beatrice from Atico Silensi, we are an agro-allied company located at—”

Now I knew what was off, she had been repeating the same line of introduction for the past few minutes and I immediately understood why.

She had been schooled on exactly the lines of what to say that she couldn’t answer any other question that didn’t follow her crammed line of opening introduction.

I understood the issue, waited, smiled, gave her my ears and move on to my appointment afterwards.
