The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has disclosed that more prominent opposition politicians are set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing increased public trust in the party and President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Speaking at the APC North-West Zonal Stakeholders Meeting in Kaduna on Saturday, Abbas said recent defections by key figures—such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and several PDP and Labour Party lawmakers—highlight a growing momentum for the ruling party.

He confirmed that 25 federal lawmakers have now defected to the APC from states including Kano, Osun, Kebbi, Delta, and Edo, as internal crises rock opposition parties. Abbas also celebrated APC’s 2024 Edo gubernatorial victory, where Senator Monday Okpebholo emerged winner, and emphasized the party’s dominance with governorship control in 19 states and the largest National Assembly representation.

The Speaker said recent reforms have strengthened the APC’s internal democracy, improved candidate selection, and deepened grassroots engagement, especially in Zamfara, Sokoto, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

Abbas described the North-West as the country’s largest voting bloc, with over 22 million registered voters according to INEC’s 2023 data. However, he warned that numbers alone cannot guarantee electoral success, stressing the need for unity and discipline within the party.

He called for urgent action on regional issues like insecurity and low agricultural productivity, proposing a coordinated platform of lawmakers, governors, and experts to design effective intervention strategies.
