FG, Opposition Battle Over Tinubu’s Economic Policies

The Federal Government and opposition parties clashed on Tuesday following criticism of the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori. The PDP and NNPP sided with the governor’s view that Nigerians are struggling under the weight of Tinubu’s economic reforms.

However, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris defended the reforms, claiming they have made more resources available to states and will show their benefits in 2025.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Idris dismissed Governor Oborevwori’s statements as distractions from the substantial allocation Delta State has received, arguing that the governor should focus on accounting for the funds rather than criticizing federal policies.

Oborevwori had previously accused the government of causing unprecedented hunger, poverty, and mass unemployment, attributing Nigeria’s worsening economic conditions to the removal of fuel subsidies and the devaluation of the naira.

Despite the opposition’s criticism, Idris stressed that the economic reforms aim to empower subnational governments and create a more equitable environment for growth.

The reforms, which included the removal of the fuel subsidy and unification of exchange rates, have led to rising fuel prices and inflation, increasing economic pressure on Nigerians.

Oborevwori’s comments were echoed by PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor and NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, both of whom urged the government to review its policies.

The National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, Kennedy Ahanotu, also supported the calls for a policy review, emphasizing that the administration should adapt its policies to the harsh realities facing the populace.

Opposition Tinubu’s Economic Policies

On the other hand, the APC rejected the opposition’s claims, arguing that it is too soon to judge the reforms, which, they believe, will stimulate agriculture and improve food security. The ruling party highlighted the creation of a new Ministry for Livestock Development, aimed at addressing food security issues.

Meanwhile, Governor Oborevwori distanced himself from the remarks made by his Assistant on Media, Felix Ofou, stating that they were personal opinions, not the position of his government. He reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s leadership and policies.
