Olu-Epe of Epe, Oba (Dr.) Shefiu Adewale Shefiu has installed Otunba Adesegun Raheem as the Obagun, war generalissimo, of Epe Kingdom.

As custodians of culture and tradition, monarchs have the prerogative and powers to bestow traditional titles on indigenes who have been outstanding in their various life endeavours and careers.

These titles no doubt assist the monarchs in carrying out several kinds of duties for the socioeconomic prosperity and by extension security and safety of the people.

Otunba Raheem is currently the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

The installation of Otunba Adesegun took place on Thursday 17th December 2020, at the grand palace of Olu Epe of Epe Kingdom.

The enthronement ceremony strictly adhered to COVID-19 protocols and health precautions amid recent surge in cases of COVID and in light of the likelihood of second wave of the pandemic.

Audience was limited to a few family members at the ancient Royal palace of Olu Epe of Epe Kingdom.

The citation reading and presentation of Otunba Segun Raheem to the Kabiesi and his Chiefs was ably done by Jagunmolu of Epe Kingdom, Alhaji Chief Elewuro after which the traditional installation and oath of office were administered by His Royal Majesty, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale.

In his general remarks,  Oba (Dr.) Shefiu Adewale was not surprised by the landmark achievements of Otunba Segun Raheem in his noble teaching career. Kabiesi also noted that he is well acquainted with Obagun’s father during the political struggle to install Dapo Sarumi as Governor of Lagos State. His Royal Majesty who, immensely extolled the virtues of the teaching profession,  described him as a personality worthy to receive the Obagun traditional title especially as a result of his rise into leadership positions through the noble teaching profession.

Kabiesi appreciated immensely the invaluable support of NUT Epe branch to his throne, he also expressed delight at his sojourning into leadership positions through the noble teaching profession. This he said he pursued up to the level of Administrative Director before he became king.

” While listening to his citation, I’m not surprised by the achievements of Segun Raheem. I am particularly happy because of his teaching career. AIthough I am not too familiar with Segun Raheem despite working together at the prestigious Epe Club in 2015 but I have a cordial relationship with his father during the days of Dapo Sarumi’s Governorship ambition.

” I am very proud to say that I started my life journey by getting employment as a teacher and rose to the peak as an Administrative Director before I bowed out. Teaching itself is the mother of all professions and also a learning process, there’s nothing you can’t achieve as long as you are a teacher and that is the more reason why I had to make sure the installation ceremony held today.

” The NUT Epe branch has always been a pillar of support to my reign, especially during the Ramadan period. The new title bestowed upon Sgun Raheem today should not be an avenue for him to change his good ways. Therefore I’m fascinated to install him as Obagun of Epe Kingdom “, His Royal Majesty said.

The traditional installation was heralded with songs by the chiefs and cheers from the few who were opportune to witness the ceremony. While Oba Shefiu Adewale handed the instrument of office to the Obagun of Epe, he noted that the golden sword presented to him is a symbol of the Epe traditional heritage as practised by his eminence, King Kosoko during his glorious reign.

Reacting to his enthronement as Obagun of Epe, Otunba Segun Raheem gave his heartfelt appreciation to the Oba Shefiu Adewale for the honour. He promised to strictly abide by the oath taken and use his position for the upliftment of his fellow kinsmen and the overall growth of the community.

” On behalf of myself and my immediate family, and the Orunbon and Ojobaro family of Oke Iposu, I appreciate His Royal Majesty and the Council in Chief for this wonderful honour given to me and by the oath that I have taken, I will abide by it and improve upon it to the level that Epe kingdom will not regret.

” I thank his Royal Majesty for this wonderful, honourable position you have bestowed on me as one of your kinsmen from Oke-Iposu Quarters and I promise that it shall be to the glory of God and the progress of the Epe Kingdom. I appreciate you kabiesi and I promise to use my position to uplift Epe indigenous, irrespective of our dichotomy, to the enviable positions they deserve “, he said.
