At least 100 people were killed following an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza that was sheltering displaced individuals. The school, located in Gaza City’s Daraj neighborhood, was reportedly struck during morning prayers on Saturday.
Reports indicate that women, children, and the elderly were among the victims.
In a statement, the Israeli military claimed the school was being used as a “Hamas headquarters” and harbored “terrorists.” The statement also emphasized that several measures were taken to minimize civilian casualties.
Reacting to the incident, Gaza’s government media office accused the Israeli military of committing a massacre, describing the attack as an act of genocide and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians.
“The occupation army directly bombed the displaced people while they were performing the dawn prayer, leading to a rapid increase in the number of martyrs.
“Due to the scale of the massacre and the large number of casualties, medical teams, civil defense, and relief and emergency teams have not yet been able to recover all the bodies.
“We strongly condemn this horrific massacre and urge the world to do the same. We hold the Israeli occupation and the American administration fully responsible for this atrocity.
“We call on the international community and organizations to pressure the occupation to stop the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing against civilians and displaced persons in Gaza, and to end the bloodshed,” the statement said.
Israel has been conducting airstrikes on Gaza since Hamas infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7, 2023.
