Over 100 Journalists Killed Worldwide in 2024, Gaza and Israel Among the Deadliest
Fifty-four journalists were killed worldwide in 2024, with a third of the deaths attributed to the Israeli army, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) reports. Eighteen journalists were killed by Israeli forces, including 16 in Gaza and two in Lebanon.
RSF reports that Palestine is one the deadliest countries for reporters, with over 145 killed by the Israeli army in Gaza since October 2023. The organization has filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes against journalists.
The killing of journalists in Gaza is described as an “unprecedented bloodbath,” with over 145 journalists killed since October 2023.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reports 104 journalist deaths worldwide in 2024, with more than half in Gaza. Israel denies intentionally targeting journalists but acknowledges some deaths in airstrikes.
In 2024, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Mexico were the deadliest countries for reporters after Gaza. The number of journalist killings worldwide rose to 104, up from 45 in 2023.
As of December 1, 550 reporters were imprisoned, with China, Myanmar, and Israel having the highest numbers. Additionally, 55 journalists are held hostage, and 95 are missing, including four new cases in 2024.
