Over 2,000 Inmates Enroll Annually in WAEC, NECO – NCoS

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has registered over 10,000 inmates for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National Examinations Council (NECO) exams over the past five years, according to The PUNCH.

NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar revealed that more than 2,000 inmates enroll annually in these exams across correctional facilities nationwide. This trend reflects the growing success and acceptance of the NCoS’s educational programs.

Abubakar noted that the number of enrolled inmates has been increasing each year, demonstrating a stronger commitment to education. He stated, “In the past five years, we have registered at least 2,000 inmates annually for WAEC and NECO exams nationwide, totaling 10,252 inmates. This rise in enrollment underscores the effectiveness and acceptance of our academic programs.”

He also highlighted the presence of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) centers within correctional facilities, enabling inmates to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. However, Abubakar pointed out significant challenges, including the lack of a dedicated budget for exam registration. The NCoS relies on donations from philanthropists and organizations to cover registration fees and provide educational materials.

He urged NECO, WAEC, and JAMB to consider waivers for inmates, similar to those provided by NOUN, to aid in their rehabilitation and resettlement. Abubakar also discussed the psychological challenges inmates face, which often hinder their academic progress. Many inmates struggle with emotional and psychological issues related to their crimes and incarceration conditions.

To address these challenges, the NCoS is incorporating digital learning platforms into an e-corrections system, aiming to make education more accessible through distance learning programs.
