Over 400 LG Caretakers Bow to S’Court Verdict

Six days after the Supreme Court ruled the use of caretaker committees to run local government councils as illegal, 401 committee members in Osun State have resigned.

Governor Ademola Adeleke appointed these members in August 2023 to oversee Osun councils, extending their tenure for six months in February 2024.

Sarafadeen Awotunde, former chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Osun State, explained that the resignations were prompted by the Supreme Court’s decision.

EDITOR’S PICK:

He noted that all 69 caretaker chairmen and 332 committee members from various wards across the state had stepped down in compliance with the ruling.

Awotunde said, “Since we already called them caretaker, I don’t think there is any appropriate word to use than that they resigned. Nobody sacked them.

“Caretakers have temporary time to spend. It means their time is over. If you look at it critically, you will see that the Supreme Court has given a verdict. So whatever is called caretaker now is illegal. So, there is nothing like a caretaker in Nigeria again.”
