EKO HOT BLOG reports that More than 6,000 people have been displaced in Plateau State’s Kanam Local Government Area as a result of suspected terrorist attacks. They are currently seeking refuge in markets and primary schools according to the press release on Tuesday.

Internally displaced persons were largely women and children who had been made homeless as a result of terrorist attacks on communities, according to findings.

Suspected terrorists stormed roughly seven towns in Kanam LGA on Sunday and opened fire on everybody they encountered, killing nearly 70 people.

The attackers also kidnapped a number of people and set their homes on fire.

Kukawa, Gyambawu, Dungur, Kyaram, Yelwa, Dadda, Wanka, Shuwaka, Gwammadaji, and Dadin Kowa were among the communities impacted.

Apart from those seeking safety at the market and primary school in Dengi, Alhaji Nuhu, a road transport worker from Gyambawu whose brother and son were shot, told our correspondent on Tuesday that others were transported to the hospital as a result of injuries sustained during the attacks.

“We have many people who have been displaced,” Nuhu, who fled to Dengi after the bombings, said. There are almost 6,000 people living in the village. If you go to Dengi’s central school and central market, you will feel sorry for the locals because some of them have fled the terrorists in their various attacked areas and are now staying there.

“During the terrorists’ onslaught on the neighbourhoods, my brother, Babangida, and his son, Aliyu, were shot. When the terrorists arrived and began shooting, my brother and his son were at home in Gyambawu.

“As they attempted to flee, the terrorists shot my brother in the hand, while the bullet struck my son in both legs. They are currently being treated in a Dengi hospital. In Kyaram village, there is another local vigilante whose mouth was smashed by a terrorist bullet when he was attacked. The three of them, as well as many others, are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.”

The transport worker demanded immediate, serious, and decisive action to prevent the terrorists from expanding their attacks to neighbouring Plateau areas.

“These people are suffering,” he said, urging the government and other public-spirited citizens to come to the relief of the displaced and injured. They require assistance.”

Meanwhile, in Abuja on Tuesday, President Muhammadu Buhari described the killings in Plateau State’s and Wase towns as atrocious, adding the culprits should not be allowed to escape punishment.

He stated, “They should not be spared or pardoned.”

According to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, the President ordered law enforcement agencies to work closely with the state government to bring the situation under control and take steps to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.

‘President Buhari labels Plateau massacres as atrocious, saying culprits should face no compassion,’ said the statement.

Buhari conveyed his sympathies over the terrorist attack, urging that peace must be restored to the state and the country as soon as possible.

“I urge all our citizens, the people of Plateau State in particular to expose the perpetrators of such incidents, their sponsors and those who encourage such criminals who carry out these dastardly acts of murder so that the law will take its course. They must not be forgiven,” the President said.
