At least 93 individuals are reported dead or missing following an Israeli airstrike on the town of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Rescue teams indicated that a five-story residential building was struck, with social media footage showing bodies covered with blankets on the ground.

There has been no immediate response from the Israeli military, which initiated a new offensive in the region earlier this month, claiming that Hamas was regrouping there.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have been active in northern Gaza over the past two weeks, particularly in Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun.

Hussam Abu Safia, director of the nearby Kamal Adwan hospital in Jabalia, informed AFP that the facility is treating children among other patients, but is struggling due to a shortage of staff and medical supplies.

“There is nothing left in the Kamal Adwan Hospital except first aid materials after the army arrested our medical team and workers,” Abu Safia said.

The IDF conducted a raid on the hospital last week, claiming it was being used by Hamas fighters. Israel maintains that its operations in northern Gaza aim to prevent Hamas from regrouping, alleging that the group embeds itself among the civilian population, a claim Hamas disputes.

In a statement on Tuesday, the IDF reported the elimination of 40 “terrorists” in Jabalia and indicated that many others were targeted in central Gaza over the past 24 hours, including some who were allegedly attempting to plant explosives near Israeli troops.

The humanitarian situation in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate, with hundreds of thousands facing desperate conditions. UN human rights chief Volker Türk stated on Friday that “the Israeli military is subjecting an entire population to bombing, siege, and risk of starvation.” He also condemned reports that Palestinian armed groups were operating among civilians, including in shelters for displaced individuals, thus putting them at greater risk.

On Monday, Israel’s parliament passed legislation to prohibit the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, from operating in the country, raising concerns that aid delivery to Gaza could be severely affected.

Israel’s military campaign against Hamas was initiated in response to an unprecedented attack by the group on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the abduction of 251 individuals. The health ministry in Gaza reports that over 42,924 people have been killed since the conflict escalated, though it does not differentiate between civilians and fighters in its figures.

Additionally, Israel has restricted international journalists, including those from the BBC, from accessing Gaza, complicating efforts to verify the situation on the ground.
