Eko Hot Blog reports that Former world number one and last year’s silver medallist, Dimitrij Ovtcharov, has secured the men’s singles title at the second edition of the WTT Contender Lagos.
Meanwhile, India’s Sreeja Akula claimed the women’s title at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall in the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on Sunday.
At the final event which was attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ovtcharov defeated his compatriot Ricardo Walther 4-1 (11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10, 11-16).
While Akula also secured a five-set victory, winning 4-1 (10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6) in the final.
Ovtcharov, on his second visit to Nigeria, sought redemption after missing out on the men’s singles title at the inaugural series in 2023.
The 36-year-old successfully corrected his previous setback with a commanding victory in his second attempt.
In 2023, Ovtcharov endeared himself to Lagos fans and became a favorite.
He reciprocated the massive support by sending table tennis equipment to young players across Nigeria.
With a total of two silver and four bronze medals at the Olympics since his debut at Beijing 2008.
Ovtcharov ranks among the most decorated male Olympians in table tennis, based on the number of medals awarded.
Meanwhile, India’s strong presence resulted in victories not only in the men’s doubles, where they defeated Nigeria, but also in the women’s doubles event.
