The Oyo State government has launched the enrollment of 10,000 basic school pupils into its healthcare insurance program.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the initiative, which involved children from 90 schools across 18 LGAs, saw the distribution of insurance scheme ID cards on Thursday at the Civic Centre, Idi-ape, Ibadan by Deputy Governor Barr Bayo Lawal.

The deputy governor stated that this drive is part of the state’s commitment to ensuring that students learn in environments that support their well-being. He commended the collaboration between the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA) and the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) in extending quality healthcare to public school children.

“This event is a collective effort to secure a brighter future for Oyo State pupils,” he remarked, adding that OYSHIA should intensify its efforts to roll out the scheme to every school in the state. He also encouraged parents and guardians to participate actively in the program.

UNICEF’s Lagos Field Office chief, Ms. Celine Lafoucriere, shared a message of goodwill, emphasizing that the launch of the Oyo State Public Primary School Pupils Health Insurance Scheme is a significant step toward providing affordable, quality healthcare—a fundamental right for every child.

“This initiative reinforces our collective commitment to universal health coverage, ensuring that no child faces financial barriers to accessing healthcare,” she said.

Ms. Lafoucriere noted that with 90 schools already enrolled across 18 LGAs, the ultimate goal is to extend coverage to all 33 LGAs in the state, ensuring no child is left behind. She reiterated UNICEF’s steadfast support for the government’s efforts toward universal health coverage.

Health Commissioner Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi also praised the dedication of OYSHIA and OYOSUBEB in promoting the health of basic school pupils, assuring the agencies of her ministry’s full commitment to the scheme.
