EKO HOT BLOG reports that all marketplaces in the historic city of Oyo have been closed after the death of Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi ll.
This happened just as the monarch’s bones were being prepared for burial on Saturday, according to Islamic rituals.
Islamic clerics, led by the Chief Imam of Oyo Land, Sheikh Mos’ud Ajokidero, and members of the Sarumi family, were reportedly observed transporting bathing materials into the Aganju forecourt, where the body is to be bathed according to Islamic procedures.
Bishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Oba Adeyemi’s closest ally, was seen conferring with the Oyomesi, led by the Basorun of Oyo, High Chief Yusuf Ayoola, who will lead the historic town until another Alaafin is installed.
Alaafin of Oyo would be buried at Bara, a five-minute drive from the palace, according to Islamic traditions.
In Oyo Igboho, where four Alaafin reigned, the name Bara and the practice of burying the Aláàfin at Bara began.
This happened just as honeybees were buzzing around, indicating that it was the honeybee calabash that the monarch chose 51 years ago during his installation.
