Oyo State to Implement N80,000 Minimum Wage by January 2025

The Oyo State Government has announced that civil servants will start receiving a new minimum wage of N80,000 from January 2025.

According to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, the agreement was reached between the state government and organized labour. While the new wage will take effect nominally from July 1, 2024, workers will receive the financial benefits starting January 1, 2025.

The commissioner added that workers who retire between July and December 2024 will have their retirement benefits calculated based on the new minimum wage. This ensures that retirees during this period also benefit from the adjustment.

To sustain the increased wages, the government has urged ministries and departments to work harder on improving the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR). This effort is expected to support the financial commitments tied to the new wage structure.

Currently, Oyo State spends over N6 billion monthly on salaries, amounting to over N77 billion annually. Oyelade noted that this places the state among the top three highest-paying employers of labour in Nigeria.
