EKO HOT BLOG reports that in Riyadh on Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asserted that solely the United States possesses the capability to prevent Israel from launching an attack on the border city of Rafah in Gaza.

Abbas warned that this anticipated assault, which he anticipates within days, has the potential to compel a significant portion of the Palestinian population to evacuate the enclave.

“We call on the United States of America to ask Israel to not carry on the Rafah attack. America is the only country able to prevent Israel from committing this crime,”

Palestinian President Warns of Impending Crisis as Israel Threatens Assault on Rafah

Abbas said in a special meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Saudi capital Riyadh.

Israel, which has been issuing threats for weeks, intensified its airstrikes on Rafah last week as part of its stated objective to dismantle Hamas’ remaining battalions in the city.

What indicators might signify Israel’s military intervention in Rafah?

Despite pleas from Western nations, including Israel’s key ally, the United States, to refrain from attacking the southern city, adjacent to the Egyptian border and provides refuge to over a million Palestinians displaced by Israel’s prolonged assault on most of Gaza.

“What will happen in the coming few days is what Israel will do with attacking Rafah because all the Palestinians from Gaza are gathered there,” Abbas said.

“The biggest catastrophe in the Palestinian people’s history would then happen.”

Abbas reiterated his rejection of displacing Palestinians into Jordan and Egypt, expressing concern that Israel may attempt to force the Palestinian population out of the West Bank and into Jordan after completing its operations in Gaza.
