Paralympics 2024: Esther Nworgu Win Nigeria’s Second Medal

Esther Nworgu has earned Nigeria its second medal at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris, securing a Silver medal in the women’s up to 41kg Para-Powerlifting event.

After a disappointing performance at the recent Olympic Games, Team Nigeria’s Paralympic athletes are restoring national pride with their medal-winning feats.

On Wednesday, Esther delivered an outstanding performance, setting two new Paralympic Records with lifts of 112kg and 118kg in her final two attempts. However, China’s Zhe Cui narrowly surpassed her by lifting 119kg, also a new Paralympic Record, to claim the Gold.

Esther’s journey to the silver medal began with a 106kg lift, placing her just behind Cui, who opened with 108kg. Nworgu’s second attempt at 112kg kept her in contention, but Cui maintained her lead with a 113kg lift. In the final round, Esther’s personal best of 118kg secured her the Silver, while Brazil’s Lara de Lima lifted 109kg to take the Bronze.

Esther’s achievement is a remarkable testament to her skill and determination, continuing Nigeria’s strong legacy in Para-Powerlifting.

Earlier in the competition, Eniola Bolaji claimed Nigeria’s first Paralympic medal in Paris, winning bronze in badminton by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna in straight sets, marking the first time an African has won a medal in badminton at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

As the Paralympic Games progress, anticipation builds as fans hope Team Nigeria will add more medals to their tally. The country secured 10 medals at the previous Tokyo Paralympic Games, including four golds.
