Eko Hot Blog reports that Minister of Sports Development Senator John Enoh has expressed confidence in world record holder Tobi Amusan’s ability to triumph in the women’s 100m event at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Amusan clocked the quickest time in the women’s 100m hurdles this year during the early hours of Sunday, posting an impressive 12.40s (0.9) at the Jamaican Athletics Invitational in Kingston.
This performance comes just over two months before the Games, scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
She clinched victory in the race, outpacing Jamaican and world champion Danielle Williams, who secured second place with a time of 12.46s.
Throughout most of the race, Amusan trailed behind reigning world champion Williams and America’s Nia Ali.
However, she made a strong surge in the closing stages, surpassing the previous world-leading time of 12.42s set by Tonea Marshall of the USA on April 20.
Buoyed by the 27-year-old’s performance this season, Enoh hailed the African Games champion.
“Take your flowers Tobi Amusan, you stormed to an emphatic win in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational, clocking a time of 12.40s (0.9), a World Lead time,” Enoh posted via X.
“You defeated world champion Danielle Williams, who came second in 12.46s, while Christina Clemons was third in 12.54s.
“Tobi, you keep making our country proud. Paris Olympics is around the corner, your performance gives us hope.
“Just like others, that Nigeria is set to break a jinx. Keep soaring, we are proud of you.”
Amusan, who has secured three consecutive Diamond League victories, holds two Commonwealth Games gold medals, two African championship titles, and three African Games gold medals.
She has competed in two Olympic Games: Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
She didn’t make it beyond the heats during her first appearance in 2016 and missed out on the podium by a place – fourth place – in Tokyo.
Since then, she has overcome her disappointments at the Olympics by clinching the world title and setting a world record the following year.
Additionally, she has secured two more Diamond League titles among other accomplishments.
