Two bike riders narrowly escaped death, yesterday, as a trailer conveying baskets of tomatoes fell on them at the City Gate along Suleja-Minna Road, Minna, Niger State Capital.

The injured trailer driver, Danjuma Mohammed, was taking the baskets of tomatoes to Kure Market, Minna, from Plateau State, when the incident occured.

The quick intervention of passers-by saved the two motorcycle riders from suffocating to death as they were quickly pulled from under the heaps of tomatoes and rushed to the hospital.

Officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police were quickly mobilised to the scene to control traffic and for rescue operation.

FRSC ambulance was used to rush the victims to the Minna General Hospital.

Although the Police Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Abubakar, said officers were on ground to ensure law and orderliness, and promising that “we will not allow hoodlums cart away any of these produces (tomatoes), youths were seen scooping diesel from the tank of the fallen vehicle with the excuse that they were trying to stop it from spilling all over the major road and possibly lead to explosion and fire.
