The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has shared how he nearly died seven years ago but survived by God’s grace.

Speaking at the ongoing Special Holy Ghost Service with the theme “Joy Unspeakable”, Pastor Adeboye, who turned 83 last Sunday, expressed gratitude for God’s kindness in his life and ministry.

He recalled falling seriously ill during the church’s annual “Let’s-Go-A-Fishing” evangelism program.

“Seven years ago, during this same program, my health completely failed because of bad roads. For the first time, I spent Christmas in bed. The devil thought he had won. I collapsed in Ilesha and had to be flown back to camp by helicopter because I was too weak to travel by road. If I had, I would not have survived,” he said.

As the helicopter was about to take off, some area boys tried to stop it.

“They held onto the helicopter, and in the struggle, a window was damaged. But by God’s grace, I arrived at camp. I believed that if I could just get there, I would recover. Seven years later, I am still here! Please thank God for me,” Adeboye urged the congregation.

“Do Not Sell Your Salvation” – Adeboye Warns

Instead of a traditional sermon, Pastor Adeboye declared blessings over the congregation and encouraged them to stay strong in their faith.

“Do not sell your salvation. Remain in God’s presence. Stop living a double life—being one person in church and another outside. Some of you dress differently in church and in public to fit in with the world. Be consistent in your faith,” he warned.

He also reminded the audience of the importance of soul-winning and prayer, saying these are the keys to experiencing “joy unspeakable” and God’s continuous presence.

The four-day event, which started on Thursday, marks the 39th anniversary of the Special Holy Ghost Service, a program that has touched millions of lives. Pastor Adeboye thanked God for the program’s success over the years.

Born on March 2, 1942, in Ifewara, Osun State, Pastor Adeboye joined RCCG in 1973 as an interpreter for the church’s founder, Pa Josiah Akindayomi.

After Akindayomi’s passing in 1981, he became the General Overseer, leading RCCG to global growth.

Despite experiencing extreme poverty in his youth—including a hunger strike because his father could not pay his school fees—Pastor Adeboye’s journey has been one of faith, perseverance, and divine calling.
