Pate Unveils Revised National Policy On Food Safety To Mark World Food Safety Day

Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a bold move to enhance the nation’s food safety standards, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof Ali Pate has marked the 2024 World Food Safety Day with the unveiling of the newly revised National Policy on Food Safety and Quality.

Addressing the theme “Food safety: prepare for the unexpected,” the Minister emphasized the critical need for vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s food supply against a multitude of threats.

“Our journey is not an easy one; it is fraught with challenges, but it is also filled with immense possibilities,” the Minister stated.

Highlighting the unpredictable nature of food safety threats, ranging from natural disasters to deliberate adulteration, Prof Pate stressed that preparedness is key to overcoming these challenges.

The revised policy, which has been meticulously crafted with input from various stakeholders, is grounded in the One Health approach.

It covers a broad spectrum of areas, including risk analysis, emerging contaminants, and an integrated surveillance and response system for foodborne diseases.

Furthermore, the policy aims to promote healthy diets by reducing the intake of salt, trans fatty acids, sugar, and alcohol.

“The National Policy transcends the confines of paper; it is a testament to our unwavering commitment to the well-being of our citizens,” the Minister affirmed. The implementation of this policy, however, will require a concerted effort from all parties involved in the food supply chain, from farmers to regulators to consumers.

To facilitate this, the Minister announced the establishment of four Technical Working Groups (TWGs) focusing on Risk-Based Regulations and Risk Analysis, Food Inspection, Traceability and Supporting Technologies, and Education and Research.

These TWGs are expected to enhance the capacity of stakeholders across the food supply chain.

Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is committed to equitable, efficient, and sustainable healthcare financing.

The Minister highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, leveraging technology, and prioritizing essential services for food safety.

He also lauded the country’s progress in food safety, noting the remarkable improvement in the Joint External Evaluation of Health Security.

Food Safety, one of the 19 technical areas evaluated, moved from “No Capacity” in 2019 to “Developed Capacity” in 2024, reflecting a significant 40% rise.

“Our vision extends beyond curative medicine—it encompasses preventive measures, health education, and community engagement, of which Food Safety is an important component,” the Minister explained, envisioning a Nigeria where safe and wholesome food is a fundamental right.
