This decision was announced by Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, during a briefing with State House correspondents on Thursday. Governor Soludo explained that the RMAFC had initially requested a 0.75% increment, citing the significant responsibilities it shoulders in mobilizing and distributing funds for developmental projects across states. However, after deliberations, NEC approved the reduced rate of 0.05%.
Soludo revealed that the Council directed the RMAFC to draft a bill reflecting the proposed review and submit it to the National Assembly for legislative approval.
He stated: “One of the issues discussed at today’s NEC meeting was a report following the earlier presentation by the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission on November 21, 2024. The presentation sought to revise or repeal the existing Act establishing the Commission and replace it with a new one.
“The RMAFC highlighted its extensive responsibilities in ensuring the Federation’s financial efficiency and noted its current funding limitations. Consequently, NEC deliberated on these concerns and made key decisions.
“First, the Council directed the RMAFC to forward the draft repeal-and-replace legislation to the National Assembly for consideration and possible passage into law. Secondly, NEC approved improved funding for RMAFC, awarding it 0.05% of non-oil federation revenue as part of proposed tax reforms. This allocation is subject to further scrutiny and approval by the National Assembly.”
Governor Soludo emphasized that while the RMAFC had sought a 0.75% increment, NEC decided on the more modest 0.05% rate, ensuring the funding proposal aligns with fiscal realities and legislative oversight.
