PDP AS HUMPTY DUMPTY

The campaign flag-off of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on October 11, 2022 is another stark reminder that the injury which the duo of its presidential candidate and national chairman, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Chief Iyorchia Ayu respectively inflicted on their party may take eternity to mend their tattered umbrella as the party, for all intents and purposes, is now a Humpty Dumpty.

EDITOR’S PICK

It is not that we would lose any sleep over the party if it breaks into smithereens, as it seems to have been. But a situation where five serving Governors of the party shunned the campaign flag-off in Uyo, not to talk of its National Vice-Chairmen of the South-South, South-West and a host of other party bigwigs who were conspicuously absent because of the sophistry, arrogance, condescension and crass impunity among other egregious recklessness of these two musketeers is a lesson on how to have honour and integrity as well as maintain fidelity to rules and agreements.

As if saying that the incessant crises that the party has been embroiled in since the presidential primary election shouldn’t matter and nothing to get roiled about, this latest outing is proof positive that PDP is a calamitous disaster waiting in the wings should it be allowed to power again.

The Uyo show of shame was like a dancer who has been shouting on the rooftop about his dancing prowess, urging judges and spectators to come watch him dance on an appointed date, only to show up not only with clay feet but also danced naked without the presence of mind to recognize having a clay feet and his nakedness.

It is not only insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians that the remaining rump of party apparatchiks, including Alhaji Abubakar and Chief Ayu would be so audacious to have made promises to them on this ill-fated campaign flag-off when they flagrantly violated their own party constitution and couldn’t keep the promises they made to themselves, it also smacks of insensitivity of the highest order.

Nigerians are currently faced with multifarious problems, some of them quite existential, that they need a Chief of State whose hands will be on the plow from Day One of his swearing-in.

The inability and unwillingness of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, to allow his party’s open wound to become cancerous up to this point is an indication that the Waziri Adamawa has absolutely nothing to offer the Nigerian people. He never has, and he never will going by antecedents. He’s simply tired and should be permanently rested in February 2023.
