PDP Governors Clash Over Acting Chairman’s Reluctance to Convene NEC Meeting
Tensions escalate within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as pressure mounts on Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, to ensure the timely convening of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.
According to the party’s constitution, NEC meetings must be held quarterly, a requirement Damagum has yet to meet due to ongoing internal crises.
Frustration is growing among PDP members over his hesitation to approve the upcoming meeting, fearing any delay could violate the party’s constitutional obligations.

Despite being on the official calendar, concerns persist that Damagum is deliberately stalling. Insiders suggest his reluctance may be tied to political maneuvering over the national chairmanship, which is expected to return to the North Central region following former Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s departure.
Damagum, from the North East, is reportedly unwilling to step down, creating a rift among PDP governors. Some support his continued leadership, while others—allegedly led by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike—insist that only a national convention can decide the party’s future.
Wike’s faction is pushing for broader party reforms, including resolving the leadership issue, further complicating matters.
The National Working Committee (NWC) is also divided on whether the NEC meeting should proceed, reflecting the party’s deeper leadership crisis, with factions exchanging suspensions and counter-suspensions in recent weeks.
Some NWC members argue the NEC meeting is essential to restore order. One anonymous member stated, “Damagum is afraid to convene the NEC, but it must happen. The chairmanship belongs to the North Central.”
He added, “If the North Central regains its rightful position, the party will emerge stronger. Nigerians are watching.”

The NEC meeting’s fate remains uncertain, but party members expect the official schedule to be followed. Frustration has intensified, particularly after recent efforts to suspend Damagum, sparking further discord within the party.
“The suspension backlash made it clear—people want Damagum out,” the NWC member added. “The meeting is scheduled, and it must proceed.”
Efforts to reach PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba for comment were unsuccessful.
