The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election under its platform.
In an interview, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, emphasized that it would be regrettable if Jonathan considered another party for his presidential ambitions.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Abdullahi stated that the PDP had always been supportive of Jonathan’s political career and expressed hope for his return. He highlighted the party’s historical role in grooming Nigeria’s prominent leaders, including figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Dora Akunyili, and Akinwunmi Adesina, underscoring the party’s legacy.
“If Goodluck Jonathan is seriously considering running, we have called on him to come back and complete his term. It will not be out of place. However, if he chooses another party, it will expose the hypocrisy within the APC,” Abdullahi said.
He also cautioned Jonathan against being swayed by recent accolades from groups and individuals who once criticized him. “It’s essential for him to remember how he was vilified by these same people who now call him a messiah. He must not fall for their sudden affection,” Abdullahi warned.
Speculations about Jonathan’s potential return to politics have been fueled by the appearance of his campaign posters in major streets of Kano. The posters, reportedly sponsored by a political group called ‘Team New Nigeria,’ carried messages like “The Goodluck Nigeria Needs.” While Jonathan distanced himself from a similar campaign in 2023, discussions about his eligibility for another term have continued, particularly among northern political figures advocating for his return.
Meanwhile, internal challenges persist within the PDP. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, crucial for resolving key issues, has faced multiple postponements. Originally slated for August 2024, it is now scheduled for February 2025. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has faced mounting criticism, with calls for his resignation intensifying.
A source within the PDP’s NEC revealed that the meeting’s outcome could shape the party’s future. “Every decision made at the NEC carries significant consequences. Delays in holding the meeting are detrimental to the party’s stability,” the source stated.
Reacting to the PDP’s call for Jonathan’s candidacy, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the move. APC’s National Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, remarked, “The APC defeated Jonathan when he was in power and will defeat him again. Bringing him back is no threat to the APC.”
He added, “It’s premature to discuss 2027 when less than 40% of Tinubu’s mandate has been completed. Even with ten Jonathans, the APC remains unbeatable.”
