EKO HOT BLOG reports that in an interview, the ex-Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) chieftain revealed that those engaged in forming a new political alliance or mega party have deliberately excluded the PDP from their considerations, describing the party as “an incurable virus.”
“I’ve attended nearly every meeting regarding the coalition. Not once has the PDP been considered,” Lawal said. “Even when some stakeholders suggest the PDP can be fixed, the situation keeps deteriorating. They’re just humouring themselves.”
He confirmed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a PDP stalwart, is actively involved in the coalition discussions. However, Lawal hinted that Atiku might be willing to leave the PDP if it becomes necessary for the broader objective.
“If Atiku eventually joins us, it means he’s left the PDP. One cannot belong to two political parties at once,” he added.
Lawal explained that the merger plans being discussed involve either forming a new party or moving en masse to an existing platform that aligns with their values. He acknowledged that parties like the Labour Party (LP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) are being considered — but ruled out PDP entirely.
According to him, the goal is to build a formidable platform where all interests can be harmonised through a transparent democratic process. “Nobody has insisted on being a candidate. Everyone agrees personal ambition must wait until we form the structure.”
Addressing a perceived split among CPC loyalists, Lawal acknowledged that while some have chosen to align with the Tinubu administration, many others — including himself — are disillusioned by what he described as anti-poor policies.
“The CPC is a Talakawa movement,” he stressed. “We fight for the marginalised. Tinubu’s government has turned against those very people. That’s why we’re regrouping.”
He also dismissed claims that Buhari gave direct blessings to the coalition, saying, “We didn’t need his approval. We only owe him respect.”
PDP Now Out of 2027 Coalition
Lawal concluded by hinting that though some CPC members may chase political appointments, those committed to justice and the original CPC ideology are determined to forge a new path.
