PDP NWC Meeting Postponed as Feud Between Wike, Governors Intensifies

The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Damagum, has postponed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting to next week.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this decision was influenced by rising tensions between former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike and the PDP Governors Forum.

The ongoing political feud between Wike and the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has caused a rift within the party. PDP governors have insisted that Fubara be recognised as the party leader in Rivers State, a stance that has angered Wike.

In response, Wike issued a warning to the governors, threatening to cause disruptions in their respective states if they meddle in Rivers State affairs.

In reaction to Wike’s comments, the PDP Governors Forum criticized his statements, calling them “irresponsible.”

The NWC meeting, originally scheduled for Wednesday and expected to address the conflict between Wike and the governors, was ultimately postponed. Punch reported that the delay was due to rising tensions and to avoid any confrontation during the meeting.

On Wednesday, Damagum, along with National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, Deputy National Chairman South Taofeek Arapaja, and Deputy National Secretary Setoji Kosheodo, were seen at the party’s headquarters between 1:05 pm and 3:10 pm.

A senior NWC member revealed that the gathering was focused on discussing issues within the Kaduna chapter of the party, particularly resolving a matter in Zango Kataf.

The source explained, “There was no need for an NWC meeting at this time. It has been rescheduled for next week. Today’s gathering was to address concerns in Kaduna State, which have now been resolved.”

Another senior NWC member suggested that Damagum postponed the meeting to avoid potential confrontations. This source also claimed that Wike’s loyalists within the NWC were meeting separately to finalize their plans.

“They are playing games with the party members and its future,” the source stated. “The postponement was driven by fear of the possible outcomes. If the meeting had taken place, we would have discussed the Rivers and other state congresses. Pressure from Wike and the governors caused the delay, as they need time to achieve their objectives.”

The source added that Wike’s faction holds a majority within the NWC, making it difficult for the other members to call for a meeting. “But let’s see what they will do next,” the source concluded.
