PDP Sweeps Rivers Local Govt Election
- The All Progressives Congress (APC) boycotted the Saturday election.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a resounding and overwhelming victory in the just concluded local government election in Rivers state.
The ruling party in the south south state record a landslide victory as they won all the 23 chairmanship seats all the 319 councillorship positions in the state.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) had boycotted the election which held on Saturday.
George Omereji, chairman, Rivers Independent Electoral Commission, announced the result of the election at the commissions’ headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Kola Ologbondiyan, national publicity secretary, described the victory as “further demonstration of its political supremacy and repositioning to take back its dominant position in the affairs of our nation at the center, come 2023”.
He said the PDP’s performance at the poll is a pointer to the fact that the APC has “lost all footholds not only in the state but also in the south-south region and the nation at large”.
The statement read in part: “The PDP says the election has shown that the APC only exists in the empty boasts of their few disoriented leaders, who have lost credence in the sight of the people and are only hanging around waiting for President Buhari to complete his second and final term in office.
“Moreover, the PDP’s wholesale electoral victory is a reaffirmation of the popularity and acceptance of Governor Nyesom Wike in his unprecedented development of the state in all sectors in line with the manifesto and ideology of the PDP.
“The PDP congratulates Governor Wike, the newly elected local government chairmen and councilors as well as the people of Rivers state for the triumph of democracy in the state.
“The party urges the newly elected council officials to emulate Governor Wike and hit the ground running in the development of the state in line with the vision of the governor and the PDP.”
