In a heartfelt Instagram post shared on Thursday, Pepe bade farewell to football with the simple caption “OBRIGADO,” expressing his gratitude.
Pepe’s final appearance came at Euro 2024, where he and the Portuguese national team faced a narrow defeat to France in the quarterfinals, with Portugal losing on penalties.
This match also marked Pepe as the oldest player ever to feature in a European Championship finals tournament.
Over his storied career, Pepe earned 141 caps for Portugal, playing a pivotal role in their victorious Euro 2016 campaign.
At the club level, his most significant achievements came during a decade-long tenure with Real Madrid.
During his time with the Spanish giants, Pepe helped secure three La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies, along with two FIFA Club World Cup victories.
