After an illustrious career that spanned over 20 years, Portuguese football great Pepe has announced his retirement from the sport.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that the 41-year-old defender, known for his formidable presence on the field, steps away from the game following a remarkable journey that saw him achieve major success at both the international and club levels.
In a heartfelt Instagram post shared on Thursday, Pepe bade farewell to football with the simple caption “OBRIGADO,” expressing his gratitude.
Pepe’s final appearance came at Euro 2024, where he and the Portuguese national team faced a narrow defeat to France in the quarterfinals, with Portugal losing on penalties.
This match also marked Pepe as the oldest player ever to feature in a European Championship finals tournament.
Over his storied career, Pepe earned 141 caps for Portugal, playing a pivotal role in their victorious Euro 2016 campaign.
At the club level, his most significant achievements came during a decade-long tenure with Real Madrid.
During his time with the Spanish giants, Pepe helped secure three La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League trophies, along with two FIFA Club World Cup victories.
In 2019, Pepe returned to FC Porto, where he continued to demonstrate his exceptional skills, winning four Primeira Liga titles across two separate periods with the club. His contributions to both club and country have cemented his status as one of the most respected defenders of his generation.
