2023 Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal

PEPT Update: Tribunal Admits Shettima’s Voluntary Resignation Letter As APC Senatorial Candidate

Eko Hot Blog reports that In a noteworthy development, The Presidential Election Petition Court has acknowledged a certified true copy of Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s resignation letter as admissible evidence.

The submitted resignation letter is aimed at providing evidence that Vice President Shettima voluntarily resigned from his senatorial candidacy before being selected as the vice presidential candidate of the APC.

The letter, dated July 6, 2022, was presented by Wole Olanipekun, the lawyer representing President Bola Tinubu and Shettima, during the commencement of their defense in response to the petition filed by Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP).

Obi and the LP have filed a challenge against the outcome of the presidential election held on February 25, raising various issues. One of their allegations is that Shettima was simultaneously nominated as both the APC senatorial candidate and the vice-presidential candidate, which they argue is a case of double nomination.

However, the respondents, Tinubu and Shettima, have consistently maintained that Shettima withdrew from his senatorial candidacy before accepting the position of vice-presidential candidate for his party.
