EKO HOT BLOG reports that in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Okupe explained that, prior to the 2023 general election, Yoruba leaders, including himself, backed Obi in line with a consensus for a Southern presidency, which they agreed should go to the Southeast. Okupe stated, “I cannot support Peter Obi again.
“The reason is because what we agreed was that a Southern President must emerge… and all eminent Yoruba people supported you. Why now bring us down publicly? It’s wrong.”
Despite his decision to withdraw support, Okupe emphasized his ongoing respect and attachment to Obi, given his role in Obi’s political ascent.
He clarified that his recent comments on Obi’s misinterpretation of the ‘emi lokan’ slogan were not an attack, but rather a commitment to speaking the truth.
Okupe argued that Obi’s view of the slogan as a divisive statement towards the Yoruba people was mistaken, noting that Tinubu’s ‘emi lokan’ expression was directed at the All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Ogun State to rally support during the party’s convention.
Okupe concluded by reaffirming that, while he does not harbor ill feelings toward Obi, he feels obligated to address any inaccuracies concerning his community and former political ally.
