The Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the invasion of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) National Secretariat by security operatives.
EKO HOT BLOG reports that armed security forces on Wednesday night, raided the NLC headquarters in Abuja.
According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, the heavily armed security personnel broke into the second floor of the building, ransacking the bookshop and seizing hundreds of books and other publications.
Upah stated that the security team claimed to be searching for seditious materials linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests.
In response, the NLC demanded the immediate withdrawal of the troops from its premises, threatening a nationwide strike.
The organization warned that it would not hesitate to call on its members to stay home until their safety and security are assured.
Reacting to the situation through his media aide, Yunusa Tanko, Peter Obi criticized the raid, describing it as an attempt to intimidate the labor union.
Obi emphasized that the NLC is an organization that fights for the rights of Nigerian workers and that their officials are easily accessible.
He added that if security agencies needed to meet with NLC officials, they should extend a proper invitation rather than resort to such tactics, which have no place in a democracy.
