EKO HOT BLOG reports that renowned singer and performer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P from the iconic group P-Square, has recently taken to social media to accuse the Lagos State Police Command of remaining silent on the issue of violence against the Igbo community during the recently concluded elections in the state.
Mr P expressed his concerns on Sunday through a series of tweets, calling for mercy on behalf of afrobeat singer Seun Kuti, who was declared wanted for allegedly assaulting a police officer while in uniform, an incident that went viral.
In his tweet, Mr P suggested that Kuti’s actions may have been a result of the perceived danger faced by his family. He criticized the police for their lack of response to the violence inflicted upon the Igbo community during the elections.
Lagos State Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, responded to Mr P’s tweet, challenging the singer to physically assault an unarmed police officer if he ever felt his family was in danger and then provide a similar excuse in defense, as he claimed Kuti had done.
Mr P, displeased with Hundeyin’s response, fired back with another tweet, expressing his disappointment with the police’s alleged silence during the elections.
He stated, “Wow! And you were so quick to respond. Just in case you didn’t know, we haven’t forgotten how mute you were during the elections concerning the whole threat on the Igbos in Lagos! We are watching, and the world is also watching! We go all dey alright, las las!” (“Las las” is Nigerian slang meaning “eventually” or “in the end.”)
The accusations made by Mr P against the Lagos State Police Command highlight his concerns regarding the alleged violence targeting the Igbo community during the recent elections. By drawing attention to the police’s perceived inaction, he seeks to shed light on the situation and hold the authorities accountable.
As a prominent figure in the entertainment industry, Mr P’s words carry weight, and his social media posts have gained significant attention.
His call for justice and recognition of the reported violence against the Igbo community in Lagos amplifies the need for a fair and inclusive society, urging authorities to address these concerns promptly and transparently.
The ongoing exchange between Mr P and the Lagos State Police Command showcases the power of social media as a platform for public figures to voice their opinions and concerns, fostering conversations on crucial social issues.
It also emphasizes the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens, regardless of their ethnic background.
