The reinstated deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has announced a financial reward of ₦1 million for anyone who can provide credible information regarding the alleged looting of government property.

During a press briefing in Benin City on Friday, Shaibu stated that he possesses evidence supporting claims of looting in certain sectors, as well as last-minute borrowing from financial institutions.

He called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies to investigate the alleged misappropriation of funds intended for projects in the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, the ongoing Radisson Hotel project, and the last-minute appointments made by the outgoing administration.

“I have received alarming reports about banks and financial institutions granting last-minute loans to Governor Godwin Obaseki. This is concerning and raises questions about good faith. In light of this, I strongly advise banks and financial institutions against providing any loans or financial instruments to Governor Obaseki or any officials of the state government in any capacity,” he stated.

Shaibu further revealed that there are indications of plans to siphon state funds using NGOs as a front, disguised as support for various projects and activities.

“These actions jeopardize our state’s financial stability and threaten the future of Edo State. I want to make it clear that I dissociate myself and my office from any such dealings,” he asserted.

He also highlighted reports of indiscriminate and covert appointments within the civil and public service at exorbitant grade levels.

“I condemn these actions and distance myself and my office from any involvement. Such appointments not only compromise the integrity of the civil service but also foster a culture of cronyism,” he added.

Shaibu alleged that some consultants are being appointed with their dates of engagement backdated to justify excessive expenditures.
