Amid escalating tensions, the PCG announced on Saturday the deployment of ships to Sabina Shoal, where it alleges China has been constructing an artificial island.
Since mid-April, PCG patrols have observed significant alterations to the sandbars of Sabina Shoal, with piles of dead and crushed coral discovered, impacting the area’s natural landscape.
Addressing reporters at a press conference, PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela emphasized the importance of preventing China from pursuing reclamation efforts at Sabina Shoal.
This strategic location, known as Escoda by Manila, falls within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone and serves as a crucial resupply point for Filipino troops stationed at the Second Thomas Shoal.
The Second Thomas Shoal has been a focal point of maritime tensions between Manila and Beijing, with frequent encounters occurring in the disputed waters.
