Popular social messaging platform WhatsApp has announced that some devices will no longer be supported starting January 2025 due to outdated technology.
The Meta-owned app stated on its FAQ page that Android phones running KitKat (released in 2013) would lose support from January 1, 2025. Additionally, iPhones still running iOS 12 will no longer be supported starting May 2025.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that users of affected devices are urged to back up any important information before support is discontinued. WhatsApp assured that impacted users will receive notifications ahead of the cut-off date.
“Our goal is to provide a private and reliable service for as many people as possible. To do so, we regularly review how WhatsApp is being used, including our growing set of features that advance global private calling and messaging,” the company stated.
WhatsApp added that the decision to end support for older devices was made to focus on technological advancements and the development of new features. Devices running KaiOS will also lose support, and users are advised to copy important data outside of these devices as there is no backup or restore functionality available for them.
“WhatsApp works on many Android devices, including those with Android 5.0 or newer. If we stop supporting your device or operating system, you will be notified in WhatsApp and reminded several times to upgrade,” the statement read.
Among the affected Android devices are older models from Samsung, LG, and Motorola released over a decade ago. The full list of phones losing access by January 2025 includes:
WhatsApp emphasized that users of these devices should consider upgrading to newer models to continue using its services uninterrupted.
