PHOTO: How The First Black Man Who Got Admission To American University Was Forced To Sit Alone
- McLaurin George was the first black man to be admitted into Oklahoma University,
- He was compelled to sit at one corner,
- The corner was far from his classmates who were whites.
McLaurin George started his lectures at Oklahoma University on the 14th of October, 1948, doing things alone. He was one dark face in the midst of over 12,000 white students.
October 14 was a favorable day for McLaurin, as the foremost black student in a university where all of them were white.
As gathered by EKO HOT BLOG, McLaurin struggled to get admission into Oklahoma University, when he first applied, he was initially denied in 1948, because he was a black man.
He took his case over to the court, and in a verdict on the 29th of September, 1948, he won the case after a federal high court decreed that if they denied him the admission, it was going to be against the constitution.
The Oklahoma State governing board requested that he should be given admission on the 11th of October, 1948. Despite his victory, his case went through another court appeal that wouldn’t award McLaurin his victory till the year 1950.
While it was unconstitutional to refuse McLaurin’s admission into Oklahoma University, but it was lawful to segregate him.
Therefore, his schooling at Oklahoma University was singled out, and different. He studied in a corner, he ate at a segregated table at a different time, he was using a separate table in the school library to read.
George’s name stays on the roll of honour, among the 3 best students of Oklahoma university up to date.
