Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has mobilised a contractor for the reconstruction of the busy pedestrian bridge at Alapere/Estate Bus Stop on the Third Axial Road, Alapere, Lagos.
The Lagos Ministry of Works disclosed the development in a statement on sunda.
Recall that a container-laden truck damaged the pedestrian bridge some months agi after trying to manoeuvre under the bridge bearing a load that was far beyond the provided headroom of the bridge thereby causing a negative impact to both vehicular traffic and pedestrian users of the bridge, which was constructed 11 years ago
During a visit to the bridge by a team comprising Lagos State Government Officials from the Office of Infrastructure and the Contractor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola said an assessment and the necessary integrity tests on the bridge had been conducted, to ascertain the level of reconstruction works to be carried out on the bridge to make it appropriate for continued public use.
According to the Special Adviser, based on the results of the tests carried out, a new design for the bridge with increased vehicular headroom is ready for implementation.
“The contractor has started carrying out preliminary works such as the dismantling of steel elements and handrails of the damaged pedestrian bridge immediately and demobilisation of the standing sections of the Bridge,” he said.
While urging pedestrians and commuters to exercise utmost caution, Daramola said, “In the interim, we have deployed more traffic personnel to manage the traffic, and the contractor put in place effective logistics for a traffic management and diversion plan for pedestrian safety while the bridge construction lasts.”
He added that, “The Administration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu is a responsive one and would leave no stone unturned at revitalizing the pedestrian bridge as quickly as possible.”
