PHOTOS: Many Homeless As Flood Sweeps Estate In Abuja

EkoHotBlog reports that Trademore Estate along Airport Road in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, on Friday, was submerged by flood following hours of heavy rain.

According to FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) led by Dr. Abbas Idriss, no fewer than 116 houses were affected by the flood that followed the torrential rain but no life was lost, following a heavy downpour that started in the early hours of the day.

Idriss said the flood, which was caused by infractions on the water channels, had made the Estate vulnerable to flooding.

Many residents were allegedly rendered homeless following the incident.

A resident  (name withheld) said some cars were swept away by the flood.

The resident said, “It rained heavily this morning and before we knew it, houses were flooded. A man who came to buy drugs from the pharmacy here stayed inside his car for the rain to subside. The car later got submerged. But thank God the man got out of the car.

“I am trying to salvage my belongings. The flood was caused by an estate promoter who channeled its water towards our side. If something is not done quickly to address this, what has happened would be a tip of the iceberg.”

The FEMA boss further dismissed social media reports alleging that a resident of the estate was missing as a result of the flood, but appealed to residents whose houses were built on water channels to relocate.

Idriss, who said the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), had predicted heavy flooding in the FCT this year, also advised residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate.

He called on the residents to use the 112 Emergency toll-free number to report emergencies.
