PHOTOS: Meet The 7 Men Who Formed The First Cult Group In Nigeria, Led By Wole Soyinka

The National Association of Seadogs famously known as the Pyrates Confraternity (Cult Group) was founded in 1952 by seven University of Ibadan undergraduates namely;

(1.) Wole Soyinka

(2.) Ralph Opara

(3.) Pius Oleghe

(4.) Ikpehare Aig- Imoukhuede

(5.) Nathaniel Oyelola

(6.) Olumuyiwa Awe

(7.) Sylvanus U. Egbuche

The group was headed by renowned Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Wole Soyinka.

The sole aim of the group was to support human right and social justice in Nigeria but that can not be said now.

As their mission statement states;

“To uphold human dignity and maintaining a just and progressive society shorn of discriminatory and unmeritorious considerations.”

Owing to the increase in tribalism in the social life of students back then in the University of Ibadan, and the influx of student of wealthy parent as against those of poor parents, the group was formed to help create a balance in the social ills of the Institute. The seven friends who formed the group were famously referred to as The Magnificent Seven.

Back then to become a member of the group, it was only possible if you were academically bright regardless of your tribe and religious belief.

The group went on to become the only confraternity on the campuses across Nigeria for almost 20 years. Their members are usually referred to as seadogs or sailors.

It will surprise you to know that this confraternity is duly registered under the Nigeria Federal Ministry of Affairs with the name “The National Association of Seadogs”

While the cult activities of these days have turned out bloody and dangerous, University student and intending ones are against getting involved in it, EKO HOT BLOG  gathered.

The confraternity has moved from the four corners of the universities to the street of Nigeria, Africa and the world.

It’s also impossible not to have one member either nuclear or extended family not associated with one confraternity or the other.
