Renowned Nigerian musician Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno, has revealed that his decision to rap in Igbo stemmed from a desire to offer something unique to the global music scene.

He explained that his upbringing and exposure to Western hip-hop heavily influenced his style but also guided his pivot toward showcasing his culture.
“Growing up, I listened to lyrical emcees like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Biggie. Their influence shaped my sound initially. At the beginning, I was rapping in English too,” Phyno said.
“But when it became time to make a career out of it, I asked myself a simple question: What am I going to sell to the world? I realized I couldn’t go to the UK or America and sell them their own language. However, I could sell them Igbo, something they don’t have. That’s what makes it unique.”
Phyno added that his upbringing in a highlife-rich neighborhood also played a key role in shaping his sound. He now actively incorporates those influences into his music and artistry.

“Representing my culture is important to me,” he stated. “I’ve started wearing traditional Igbo attire more often because it’s a reflection of who I am and what I represent. I aim to be different and to showcase my roots.”
Phyno’s decision to embrace Igbo in his music has not only set him apart but has also positioned him as a cultural ambassador, introducing the richness of his heritage to global audiences.
