Two out of the four unions on strike at the Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, have signed an agreement with the Plateau Government to end the ongoing strike in the institution.

Prof. Yohana Izam, PLASU Vice Chancellor, made the disclosure during a tour of Gov. Simon Lalong administration’s Legacy Projects within Plateau Central Zone by the state Commissioners for information and Health alongside the State Director General, Research, Planning and Documentation.

He gave the names of the Associations as NASU and the Nigeria Academic Association of Technologists (NAAT), whom were in agreement with the terms of the Plateau Government, which owns the University.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that four unions of the institution, ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT had in November 2020 embarked on strike over some teething issues bordering on allowances and lack of infrastructure for students.

Consequently, the State Government set up a high powered 7 – Man Committee headed by the State Head of Service ( HOS), Mr Azi Izang, to negotiate with the striking unions to end the impasse.

“As we speak, two of the unions, NASU and NAAT have signed the agreement with the state government.

“We are hoping that ASUU and SSANU will by next week also agree and sign the agreement with the state government to allow for the reopening of the university for resumption of full academic activities.

” This committee’s feat is one one important thing that the government has done and we commend Gov. Simon Lalong for this laudable intervention,” Izam said.

He said that the immediate approval of implementation of the main stream allowances for staff which included the minimum wage beginning from 2021 was a welcome development.

“We are very happy that the government has come to our rescue, once again, to ensure that full academic activities resume in the University as soon as possible.

“”So far, so good, we hope that with these offers to the unions, sooner than later, academic activities will resume in this institution, ” the vice chancellor said.
