The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended one Ifeoma Ozougwu, 24 and her husband, one Jude Ozougwu, 40 for allegedly battering and inflicting injury on a 10-year-old minor (name withheld) in Enugu.

The suspects were identified as the child’s guardian.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Saturday in Enugu, made the announcement.

Ndukwe noted that the arrest was made after a tip-off from a resident in the Akonameze Street, Thinker’s Corner, Enugu, where the lady lived.

Ekohotblog learned that due to the timely intervention of the police, the child was rescued and taken to the hospital where she is currently receiving treatment.

“On receipt of the visibly exhausted and traumatized victim, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmad Abdurrahman, instructed the Area Commander to rush her to hospital for treatment.

“He bemoaned why the suspect will be so heartless to abuse and inflict such grievous injuries on another woman’s child left in her care,” the PPRO stated.

According to him, the commissioner directed the immediate launch of a thorough investigation and prosecution of the suspect, her husband, and any other culpable accomplices to the crime.

Abdurrahman also warned against child abuse, alleging that the force will not take it likely on any offender.

“The command will not spare anyone found culpable in such inhuman acts that infringe on the dignity and fundamental human rights of children.

“Parents/guardians should take responsibility, adequately care of their children/wards, and train them with the fear of God Almighty.

” Preliminary investigation showed that the suspect, who is a mother of three, maltreated the minor by using different objects to inflict injuries on the little girl.

” These dangerous objects included hot pressing iron, iron rod, and nails that she allegedly used to inflict grievous bodily harms and inserting pepper into her private part.

“Residents have been enjoined to remain law-abiding and promptly assist the police with credible information that will help in fighting crimes against vulnerable children.
