Police Apprehend Market Women For Selling Expired Poultry Products In Aiyetoro Epe
Police apprehended market women for selling expired poultry products in Aiyetoro Epe.
Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a significant crackdown, police have apprehended several market women in Aiyetoro for selling expired frozen turkey and chicken to unsuspecting customers.
The arrests come in the wake of a disturbing discovery that confiscated poultry products, deemed unfit for consumption, were dumped by the Nigerian Customs Service at Afero Dump site, opposite Alaro City Epe, on the night of July 11, 2024.
The incident has raised serious health concerns, as large crowds, including street urchins, were seen flocking to the dump site to collect these discarded products.
Eyewitnesses reported that cartons of the expired poultry were being sold for as low as NGN4,000, creating a potential public health crisis.
Local authorities have issued a stern warning to the community, urging residents to exercise extreme caution when purchasing poultry products.
Given the ongoing cholera outbreak in Lagos State, the consumption of contaminated food poses a heightened risk to public health.
Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, the Local Government Chairman, along with Hon Tunde Odupe, Supervisor for Environment, and Environmental Health Officers, are actively addressing the situation.
They emphasize the importance of buying poultry products from reputable vendors only and encourage the community to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities immediately.
“This is a serious issue that threatens the health and well-being of our community,” said Princess Animashaun.
“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our residents and prevent the spread of disease.”
As investigations continue, the authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the situation and taking appropriate action against those involved in the illegal distribution of expired food products.
The community is urged to remain alert and cooperate with the efforts to maintain public health and safety.
For any information or to report suspicious activities, residents are encouraged to contact the local authorities promptly.
