The Police on Monday paraded a kidnap gang that was formed in Katsina Prison and abducted a businessman in Sokoto, Alhaji Tukur Subairu, for ransom.
They were arrested by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS) and Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Force Headquarters in Abuja. .
Parading members of this gang alongside other kidnapping and armed gangs robbery who operate with military uniforms as well as an Internet fraud group in Abuja on Monday, Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, said a cash sum of N10.1 million, which was part of the ransom was recovered from them.
Mba said, the gang led by one Rufai was formed in the prison and members were all persons who had been prosecuted by the police and serving jail sentences and were almost rounding off their sentences while others were in the prison awaiting trials.
“Somehow, they were able to get themselves together while n the prison, formed a very deadly gang and while there they hatched a plot to kidnap one Alhaji Tukur Subairu, a wealthy businessman in Sokoto State. As soon as they were out of the prison, they embarked on that mission, kidnapped the businessman and collected ransom running into several millions. We went after them and today, all the gang members have been arrested. If you look at our display table you will see a total sum of N10.1 million, which is part of the ransom they collected,” he said.
On other arrests made, he said, “We have today a total of 81 suspects most of them are suspects that have been indicted in our investigations in prima facie cases of murder kidnapping, unlawful possession of weapons and internet fraud clearly established against them.
