The arrest was made known via a statement by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, on Sunday.
Ajisebutu disclosed that the suspect was arrested after allegedly committing the offence on September 20, 2021.
The police spokesperson further stated that the incident occurred after the suspect’s wife went to a vigil in one of the churches in the neighborhood.
He said, “The victim’s mother had kept her in the custody of the suspect’s wife when she travelled out of town for three weeks.
“According to the victim’s mother when she returned from the journey, the victim reported to her that she was defiled by the suspect.
“However, during interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime while pleading for mercy,” Ajisebutu disclosed.
The police spokesperson said the victim had since been taken to the hospital for medical care, adding that the case has also been transferred to the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for investigation and prosecution on the directive of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu.
