The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three officers for alleged extortion of motorists in Port Harcourt.
The arrested officers—Inspector Sarah Anendei, Inspector Caroline Promise, and Inspector Christiana Jatau—were apprehended under the Rumuokoro flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, where they were reportedly operating an unauthorized checkpoint.
Reports indicate the officers have been engaged in similar illegal activities for an extended period.
Confirming the arrests, the Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the command had been monitoring the officers based on public complaints about their conduct. At the time of the arrest, two of the officers were out of uniform, and cash allegedly extorted from motorists was found on them.
Iringe-Koko said, “The Rivers State Police Command has arrested three of its officers following a coordinated operation by the CP Monitoring Unit on October 29, 2024. Inspector Sarah Anendei, Inspector Caroline Promise, and Inspector Christiana Jatau were apprehended around 3 pm at the Rumuokoro Flyover, engaging in extortion practices.”
She added that two officers were out of uniform while carrying out this misconduct, further violating police regulations. Video footage of the incident provided clear evidence of their actions. A search of the officers led to the recovery of the extorted money.
Iringe-Koko confirmed the officers are currently in custody pending disciplinary measures, emphasizing the Command’s commitment to professional integrity and accountability for any personnel violating the principles of service.
