Police Commission Cracks Down on Corrupt Officers in Southeast

• PSC warns police against human rights abuses in Southeast.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has vowed to take strict disciplinary action against police officers involved in human rights violations and extortion of motorists in Nigeria’s Southeast region.

The Commission’s Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, condemned these acts, warning that errant officers will face dismissal.

Eko Hot Blog reports  that DIG Argungu, represented by PSC spokesman Ikechukwu Ani, made the remarks at the ongoing Southeast Stakeholders Summit on Peace and Security and Public Hearing on Human Rights Violations in Enugu.

He emphasized that the PSC would no longer tolerate officers operating outside their legal boundaries, particularly those engaging in civil disputes for financial gain.

“The Commission is aware of serious human rights violations by misguided police officers who, despite repeated warnings, continue to meddle in civil matters due to financial incentives,” Argungu stated. “Officers must stay clear of land disputes, debt and rent collection, marital disagreements, and other civil cases that should be handled by the courts.”

The PSC Chairman expressed concern over the high level of insecurity in the Southeast, describing it as the “unofficial headquarters of human rights violations.”

He condemned corrupt security officers who extort motorists at roadblocks, which he described as “toll gates where road users are forced at gunpoint to part with money.”

Argungu praised the summit’s organizers for shedding light on these pressing issues and commended Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah for his efforts in improving security. He noted that Enugu had successfully ended the Monday sit-at-home protests that had crippled the region’s economy.

“The PSC fully supports the fight to rid the Southeast of banditry, crime, and corruption,” Argungu added. “We will ensure that officers who abuse their positions are held accountable.”

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to restoring law and order, pledging to collaborate with local authorities to ensure security and human rights are upheld in the region.
