Alabo Alfred, spokesperson for the command, confirmed the action, emphasizing its necessity to prevent any potential unrest within the state. When questioned about the reason behind the increased security presence, particularly in connection with the ongoing dispute involving the recently ousted 16 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers and the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers, Alfred simply stated, “Just wait. I will soon release a press statement concerning what is happening.”
Outside the assembly complex, tensions ran high as supporters of both the ousted PDP lawmakers and the yet-to-be-sworn-in APC lawmakers gathered. According to Mathew Danladi, a PDP supporter, their presence was in response to rumors of an attempted impeachment of the Speaker by the APC members. Danladi expressed their determination to resist any such move, citing ongoing legal proceedings regarding the status of the 16 PDP lawmakers.
However, Barnas Dalyop, an APC supporter, defended the party’s stance, asserting that the court of appeal had ruled in favor of the APC members as the rightful representatives of their constituencies. Dalyop questioned the Speaker’s refusal to swear in the APC members, citing the court’s decision as the highest authority in electoral disputes.
As tensions continue to simmer, the standoff between the opposing factions underscores the delicate political landscape in Plateau State.
